Back Again

Maybe there's no such thing as a normal week in the Bay Area.

- Most of the waiting crowds, including the "peaceful" Tibet protesters, missed the Olympic torch relay because it was rerouted at the last minute. 

- A grass fire on an island in the delta caused some people who regularly breathe lousy air to panic about air quality. 

- Our post-racial presidential candidate offered a different type of prejudice at a San Francisco fundraiser.  His poorly-chosen words weren't even newsworthy there until they gained attention elsewhere.  After all, it's not intolerance if it's true, right?

Glad my brother likes living there.

A Bit of Quiet

I've got some family business I need to attend to, so the blog is going to be quiet this week.  Sorry for the interruption.

A Day Delay

Sorry for the delay, but I'll post the next Random Nature tomorrow.  Things were just too busy today.

Breaking for Taxes

It is once again tax season, so it's time to take the annual bureaucratic break.  Blogging will be sparse through the weekend.  It would be a great time for some rain, something we haven't had enough of in the last month.

A Snowy Weekend

It's been snowing here most of the time since Friday night.  With the temperature hovering near freezing, not much of the snow has stuck.  But, it's been enough to knock out satellite internet for most of the weekend.  And while the local dish is working right now, the PBS and Fox channels have been "temporarily unavailable" for awhile.  Thus, no Bucs-Giants game...heavy sigh.  But at least I haven't lost power, knock on wood. 

At any rate, I'd substantially finished the biodiesel post on Friday but couldn't get it published until now.  And with the snow picking back up, I definitely can't conclude that normal blogging has resumed yet. 

Happy Thanksgiving

I've got relatives coming in later today for the extended weekend, thus blogging will be at best light.

A Pause

I've got family due in this evening, so blogging will probably be light for a few days.

September Showers Bring...

Gosh, that nice shower we had today gave me 14 times more rain than I had for the entire month last year--a meager 0.03".  Just a few more hundredths and I can hit the monthly average up here of 0.49".  Each hundredth of an inch is another 271.5 gallons of water per acre for the property and all of the life it supports.

My total for the rain year that just ended was 36.72".  That's 17 inches less than last year, but only 6+ inches below average...and 5 inches more than Grants Pass averages.  Now let's just hope that this gorgeous summer finishes that way.

Repairs

Sorry about the sudden quiet.  The computer started acting up on Saturday, and by Sunday I knew it was bound for the shop.  It's working much better now, though it seems to have a bit more personality than it used to.  It's getting old enough that one has to think its days are numbered.  However, I'd prefer to keep it running for awhile, if for no other reason that there is no software yet that will allow my particular satellite modem to run with Vista. 

Meanwhile, turns out that avoiding typing wasn't bad thing.  Later on Sunday when clearing some brush and knocking down a few small trees on the property, I smashed my thumb but good, splitting open the end of it.  My thumb still doesn't really want to touch anything, so there won't be any longer posts for a few days.

Rescheduling

For awhile now, I've been seriously questioning why I write what are often my longest posts--Random Natures--on what is often my busiest day of the week--Wednesday.  Habit I guess.  But after another busy Wednesday that would have me writing into the wee hours, it's time to change.  So, I'm switching to posting Random Natures over the weekend--Saturday or Sunday.  Sorry about the late notice.
